you can get with this or you can get with that

The other night we were reading the scriptures and we got to a verse about feeding and helping the poor, sick, and needy. (I'm paraphrasing obviously.) And Lauren in her quest for heaven says, "So to get into heaven, you have to help people."

I respond, "Well, if you love people as Christ loves them, then you'll want to help them. Remember, love one another?"

"Yeah. So after you're baptised, then you just have to keep the commandments and help people to get into heaven."

"Sweetheart, if you believe in Jesus Christ then you'll want to keep the commandments and help others."

"But that's what gets you into heaven, right?"

"Yes," I concede. And I watch her as she prepares a mental checklist of getting-into-heaven requirements. (So my child.)

Then yesterday, I got two bags of baby clothes together to donate to a pregnant teen crisis center. And Lore asks, "Mom, what are you doing with those baby clothes?"

"We're giving them to people who need them."

"Are those our old baby clothes? Why do you have to give away our stuff? Why can't you just buy some new ones to give away?" (So Aaron's child.)

"Do you still wear baby clothes?"

"No."

"Well there are other people who need these. And I want to give them away. Remember the scripture about clothing those in need?"

"Oh yeah. So you can get into heaven."

I love it. It's all about the checklists.

I read this to Sean. We both laughed. Lauren is so funny, just trying to figure it all out.

That's way funny. I love your commentary of both your personalities in her response.
